Maintaining the Stockpile | Department of Energy
NNSA must assess the effects of aging and manufacturing processes on the nuclear stockpile, without nuclear explosive testing. In hydrodynamic testing, nonfissile isotopes (which can't sustain a neutron chain reaction), such as uranium238 and plutonium242, are subjected to enough pressure and shock that they start to behave like liquids – becoming hydrodynamic.
